bKV from Continentale Health Insurance: Plans, Benefits & Costs

Continentale Health Insurance divides its supplementary health insurance (bKV) offerings into three separate plan families: ConCEPT Choose, ConCEPT Choose Max, and ConCEPT Choose More. The extent to which naturopathic treatments, medications, bandages, remedies, medical aids, and vision aids are reimbursed depends on the selected plan option, as does the specific coverage for preventive and travel vaccinations. This differentiation allows employers to consciously manage the level of benefits rather than adopting a rigid, one-size-fits-all package.

In the field of dentistry, professional teeth cleaning is firmly established in the list of benefits; teeth whitening is also included, depending on the plan. Preventive checkups, daily hospital allowance, and optional hospital services are also structured according to the plan, so the level of coverage varies between budget tiers and plan options. The offering is supplemented by digital health services: A video consultation with a doctor—provided as an assistance service with more than 80 participating physicians—is available daily from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. and is provided by Continentale itself as a standalone service. In addition, there is a service for scheduling appointments with specialists and a medical hotline that facilitates access to medical advice outside of regular office hours.

From an organizational standpoint, this program is aimed at companies with ten or more employees—this minimum size applies uniformly to all three collective bargaining agreements. Under this group plan, a health assessment in the form of an individual risk assessment is not a prerequisite for inclusion in the health budget, since reimbursement is provided without prior payment by the statutory health insurance (GKV) anyway.

How budget carryovers, family coverage, and services for family members are handled is also determined by the selected plan option, as are the terms and conditions upon leaving the company. By selecting a plan, employers therefore also determine the extent to which these aspects are provided for their workforce.

Since ConCEPT Choose, ConCEPT Choose Max, and ConCEPT Choose More offer different tiers ranging from 400 to 1,600 euros per year, the choice of tier directly determines the annual reimbursement limit available per insured person.

The outpatient and dental services included in the respective plan—such as treatments provided by alternative practitioners, osteopathy, or professional teeth cleaning—are deducted from the health care budget. Since advance payment by the statutory health insurance provider is not required, the corresponding bills are deducted directly from the budget without the need to first obtain reimbursement from the insurance provider.

Whether and to what extent unused portions of the budget can be carried over to the following year varies depending on the collective bargaining agreement.
