uniVersa's Supplementary Health Insurance: Plans, Benefits, and Costs

uniVersa bundles its group health insurance offerings into a plan structure with six options that can be customized using individual modules. Options include an inpatient module, a preventive care and vaccination module, and the dental modules “Dental Treatment & Preventive Care” and “Dental Prosthetics.” The preventive care module further distinguishes between three budget levels of 250, 500, and 750 euros per two calendar years, allowing employers to tailor coverage according to their budgetary needs. No advance payment from statutory health insurance is required to access these benefits, which simplifies the process.

In the outpatient sector, the preventive care module covers both the statutory preventive care programs—without the age limits and examination intervals that are otherwise standard for those programs—as well as individual medical preventive care services such as check-ups, eye and glaucoma screenings, bone density testing, skin cancer screening, colonoscopies, and prenatal care. These services are reimbursed up to the selected budget limit for every two calendar years. However, services provided by alternative practitioners, naturopathic treatments, as well as medications, bandages, medical devices, and assistive devices are not included in the businessline plans. Protective and travel vaccinations, as well as professional dental cleanings, are included.

For inpatient care, the uni-bKH coverage module provides optional benefits such as a two-bed room and treatment by a private physician or the chief physician, combined with the freedom to choose any hospital—including private clinics—as well as patient transport and outpatient surgeries in accordance with Section 115b. Those who opt out of these benefits receive, instead, a substitute daily hospital allowance of 30 euros if they forgo the two-bed room, 60 euros if they forgo treatment by a private physician, or 90 euros if they forgo any reimbursement of costs; for single rooms without proof of costs, 50 percent of the surcharge is covered, and inpatient psychotherapy is covered for up to 30 days per year. Additional modules for dental treatment & preventive care as well as dental prosthetics are available. As digital services, uniVersa offers a specialist appointment service and a medical hotline; video consultations are not included.

From an organizational standpoint, uniVersa requires a minimum company size of ten employees to establish an employer-sponsored health insurance plan. Since no prior coverage from statutory health insurance is required for the benefits, there is no need for an additional coordination step with the statutory health insurance provider.

Spouses or domestic partners covered by statutory health insurance, as well as children up to age 27, can be enrolled in the dental prosthetics, dental treatment, and inpatient care modules under special terms; the preventive care module is excluded from this. Waiver of waiting periods applies only if enrollment is processed through the employer. If an employee leaves the company, the existing supplementary health insurance plans may be continued as an individual policyholder upon reaching the age limit or in the event of disability; in the case of other types of separation, continuation under comparable plans is possible provided the application is submitted within two months.

With a minimum company size of ten employees and a flexible, modular budget structure, uniVersa’s plan is particularly well-suited for small and medium-sized businesses seeking a straightforward, budget-based health and dental insurance plan with an optional inpatient coverage component. Externally, the Franke & Bornberg 2025 plan was rated “Excellent” by Franke & Bornberg and received the highest rating of “Outstanding (5/5)” from Morgen & Morgen.

Costs

Premiums for uniVersa’s supplementary health insurance (bKV) are based on the combination of selected coverage modules and, in the case of the preventive care module, on the selected budget level of 250, 500, or 750 euros per two calendar years. The higher the budget tier, the more extensive the individual preventive care services—such as check-ups, eye or skin cancer screenings, and prenatal care—that can be billed within that period.

Both statutory preventive care programs—without the usual age and frequency limits—and individual supplementary medical services are counted toward the preventive care budget. The maximum amount does not apply to a single calendar year, but rather to any two calendar years combined.

There are no provisions for carrying over unused budget funds beyond this two-year period; any unused amounts will lapse thereafter. For the other coverage components—such as inpatient care, dental treatment, and dental prosthetics—the respective benefit limits apply regardless of the budget structure of the preventive care component.
